Importance of Using Sunscreen
We’ve all been told to put on sunscreen throughout our lives. More than likely, it was a request from your parents when you were younger. Although we’ve heard that sunscreen is important, very few of us are aware of the reasons why. When out in the sun, the skin protects the body from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Even on cloudy days, it’s wise to use sunscreen as the skin is still susceptible to the intense rays of the sun, which can lead to several unwanted consequences. Applying sunscreen daily can lead to the following benefits:
Prevents Signs of Aging from Sun Exposure
While there are many benefits to being outdoors in the sun, there also are potential dangers if the skin is left exposed for too long. One of those dangers is premature aging. Exposure to the sun with little to no protection causes damage to the skin’s elastin, collagen, and cells. Over time, the results often are skin discoloration, wrinkles, fine lines, and a leathery appearance. Thankfully, these side effects can be prevented with daily sunscreen use.
Reduces the Risk of Skin Cancer
When we think of cancers, we don’t often think of our skin. However, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It’s estimated that approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. One of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer is by using sunscreen whenever you expect to be out in the sun for a significant period. People who use a minimum of SPF 30 multiple times on these days substantially reduce their risk for skin cancer.
Prevents Skin Discoloration
Often called sun spots, skin discoloration can be the result of having too much exposure to sunlight without adequately protecting the skin. Typically an unusual tan or brown color that’s separate from birthmarks, skin discoloration can develop on the face and neck, head, hands, and arms, making it difficult to cover up. By applying sunscreen, people can help prevent these spots.
Lowers Blotchiness on the Face
Areas of the skin, especially on the face, can become irritated when exposed to the sun’s rays for an extended period. This can cause eruptions of red veins, creating a blotchy appearance. The application of sunscreen helps prevent this from happening and impedes the onset of acne and other damage caused by sun overexposure.
